Ujirani Mwema Welfare Association is a community structure by residents with a membership that spans across Uhuru Estate neighborhood and its environs i.e. Jericho column (At Nile road and Buruburu Road intersection), Buruburu Phase1, Outering, Pioneer Estate, aimed at making these estates a place that is safe to live and raise families. The group has an estimated membership of around 1500 residents.
The 2007 post-election violence was the seed that triggered Ujirani Mwema. The conversations dialogues and peace initiatives that followed were as spontaneous as the violence that followed the disputed elections in 2007, and form part of the how and why Ujirani Mwema was formed.
Led by the community leaders and the then Councilor (now MCA) Robert Mbatia, the potential violence was swiftly diffused by a call to unity and a message of peace appropriately branded “Ujirani Mwema” (Good Neighborliness).
